Whole flaxseed weighs 150g per cup. The seeds must be ground before eating for your body to absorb the nutrients — whole seeds pass through undigested. Ground flaxseed weighs about 110g per cup due to the fluffy texture. To make a flax egg (egg substitute), mix 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water and let sit 5 minutes until gel-like. Store whole flaxseed in a cool, dark place for up to a year. Grind only what you need, as ground flaxseed goes rancid quickly.
